The original Weight Watchers plan invites members to weekly meetings where members hold group sessions, helping dieters form a network of support with people sharing similar experiences. Upon arrival, each person checks their weight privately. Meetings are conducted by a trained Meeting Leader who motivates and offers the group support through information about nutrition and fitness.

Members are also welcome to join the Weight Watchers community online, at weightwatchers.com. From the comfort of their homes, members can form virtual support groups, monitor progress and access hundreds of approved recipes, like Blue Cheese Muffins, Sweet and Sour Pork, Grilled Beef Fajitas and even delectable treats like Chocolate Mint Brownies. If it’s not convenient to prepare WW-approved meals at home, they offer a wide variety of frozen meals and point-complimenting menu items at Applebee’s.

Weight Loss Program Options

Weight Watchers offers 2 diet programs to choose from that best fits your lifestyle:

1. Flex Plan - enjoy all the foods that you love while making better choices with the point system. The key to this diet plan is to control how much you eat, not limit what you eat.
2. Core Plan - enjoy satisfying foods from all food groups without counting. Learn to stay away from empty calories.

Continue to part II of our review including information on the approximate cost of the diet program as well as pros and cons of the weight loss plan.

How Does Weight Watchers Work?

The core concept of their diet program is the innovative points system. Each food type is assigned a point value depending on the amount of calories, fat, and fiber content.

Upon signing up for the diet program, a customized diet plan is put together and you are assigned a specific daily points value to follow.

From that point on, your daily food intake is dependent on this point system. Thus, you might eat a bigger breakfast and a smaller lunch or vice versa. In fact, as long as you have enough “points” left over at night, you can eat as you please.

Approximate Cost

Judy’s Weight Watchers Success Story

Good genes run in Judy’s family. She and her four sisters grew up tall and thin. But her weight gradually crept up, and before you could say “hot fudge sundae,” she had 148 pounds on her 5′7″ frame.

Her solution: Joining Weight Watchers in May 2001. By July of that year she’d slimmed down to 127.8 pounds*. Even better, the 43-year-old felt confident enough to buy a bikini, something she’d last purchased as a 13-year-old. Judy says happily, “I wore it while strolling on the beach with my thinnest sister.”

John’s Weight Watchers Success Story

In October 2001, despairing because he weighed 222 pounds, the 5′ 10″, 41-year-old John was fruitlessly trying one fad diet after another. Then he witnessed several guys, including his brother, losing weight with Weight Watchers. Their success convinced him that the program might make sense for him too. By April 2002, he was down to 180.2 pounds.
